Mobile and web based infrastructure for targeted and proactive participatory sensing

Participatory sensing applications have gained popularity due to increased use of mobile phones with embedded sensors. Dealing with low quality data has been one of the main concerns in participatory sensing. In this thesis, we propose an infrastructure for increasing the data quality of participatory sensing applications. We design a mobile and world wide web-based infrastructure to enable scientists to effectively acquire crowd sensed data from specific areas of interest. The domain scientists can mark the areas of interest on a web-portal and citizen scientist will be proactively informed about the participatory sensing opportunities near to their current location. We present a caching algorithm to address the problem of location dependent data invalidation and to increase the performance of our system. We also perform several experiments for studying the effectiveness and efficiency of our caching algorithm.
