The present study extends the literature on family of origin contributions to overweight and obesity by exploring the influence of family economic stress and parent related factors on offspring body size outcomes in early adulthood. Path analysis was used to assess data from 564 African American target youth and their female primary caregivers. Results were analyzed separately by gender to assess gender differences in the processes shaping weight-related outcomes. Results show that family economic stress is only indirectly associated with unhealthy weight among all target youth. However, a parenting effect was found, such that harsh parenting partially mediates the effect of economic stress on both male and female youths weight status in early adulthood. Further, modeling effects were also discovered and differed by target gender. These results have implications for interventions targeting overweight or obese youth, and suggest parenting is a critical area to target to aid in healthy behavior change.
