    Abstract
In recent years, sustainable development has gained favor in various disciplines, especially in the field of urban planning and design. As part of this push, researchers introduced the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD), hoping to reduce dependence on personal automobiles achieve sustainable development for cities. The population of Athens, Georgia is growing, and its economy is thriving, making this university city a promising regional core center. A transit hub is necessary in such a city, and this hub could allow residents, visitors, and students to live healthier lifestyles by using alternative transportation other than cars. The goal of this thesis is to apply TOD principles to the existing transit station in the River District of downtown Athens. This study also proposes recommendations for Athens’ future.
