Ultrafast degenerate four-wave mixing in Y2SiO5:Ce3+

Both linear and nonlinear spectroscopic techniques are used to investigate a single crystal of the blue phosphor Y2SiO5:Ce3+. In particular, excitation and emission spectra are measured at room temperature. Ultrafast two beam degenerate four-wave mixing is used to investigate dephasing at room temperature. Numerical calculations of optical dephasing on a model system are performed within the optical Bloch model. Comparison of the model calculations with experimental results indicate that the dephasing time of Y2SiO5:Ce3+ is considerably shorter than the pulsewidth of the laser pulses, i.e. 70 femtoseconds.
