Measurement of phonated intervals during four fluency-inducing conditions

This study was conducted in order to further explore vocalization changes of persons who stutter during four fluency- inducing conditions: chorus reading, prolonged speech, singing, and rhythmic stimulation. Phonation intervals (PIs) were measured during these conditions and compared to PI distributions during control speaking and reading conditions. Results revealed a reduction in short PIs in specific phonation duration ranges during all experimental conditions, and an increase in the proportion of longer PIs during singing, prolonged speech and slow chorus reading. However, the data also show that no clear relationship exists between the amount of short PIs and frequency of stuttering. Interpretations and implications of the findings for stuttering treatment and research are discussed.
