This thesis shows the development of Contrastive Linguistics from its beginnings to the present day. The controversy with Error Analysis and Universal Grammar that fueled the development towards Interlanguage Analysis and the related aspects of Universal Grammar and Markedness Theory are being discussed. Furthermore, this thesis shows the importance of Transfer and Parameter Grammar for the further development of Contrastive Linguistics towards its current state.
