This study describes how ocean science concepts can be adapted for use in the secondary science classroom. The research questions for this study are (1) What are some examples of marine science topics currently being investigated in on marine research vessels? (2) What is it like to conduct an investigation on a marine research vessel? and (3) How can teacher research on a marine vessel be utilized by science teachers to (a) create authentic learning experiences and (b) promote ocean literacy? Using the framework of autoethnography, a personal account of scientific discovery was developed. Data collection included participatory research, direct observation, and informal interviews. The results of this study detail the nature of science at sea and offer recommendations for teachers wishing to apply ocean science concepts in their classrooms. This study also has implications for alternative approaches to implementing the National Science Education Standards.
