Benjamin Lebert’s second novel Der Vogel ist ein Rabe has often been labeled as an example of popliterature, a genre that dominated the German book market of the late 1990s. In this paper, I argue that his text is instead heavily influenced by German expressionist literature of the early 20th century. Therefore, not only Der Vogel ist ein Rabe but also the concept of expressionist literature as a generational phenomenon that can only be understood in the social and aesthetic context of Modernity need to be re-evaluated.
