Nondestructive interaction of ultrafast laser pulses with transparent dielectrics

The interaction of focused ultrashort pulses with a thin transparent dielectric sample under the destruction threshold is investigated by studying the change in the pulse shape as a function of input pulse energy. The complex ﬁeld is measured using an improved high dynamic range second harmonic generation frequency resolved optical gated experiment and analyzed using improved phase retrieval algorithms. The experimental results are compared to computer simulations, which show that the pulse develops strong spatio-temporal dependencies due to the generation of an under-critical free carrier plasma.
