The 1970s-80s was an incredibly turbulent period in the socio-political history of Guatemala. The extremely skewed distribution of wealth and resources throughout the country along with increasingly repressive military regimes contributed to mass uprisings and various revolutionary currents seeking social justice. Along with these movements, a new literary trend, the testimonio, emerged as one of the primary literary outlets. The testimonio served as a primary source of denouncement, education, and mobilization at the national level, while appealing to an international audience to intercede on the behalf of the abused and exploited. The present study aims to analyze the conditions that gave rise to the revolution and the genre, as well as explore its effectiveness at the national and global level.
