This thesis analyzes the possible causes of alternation of a particular kind of psychological verbs called transitive reverse verbs. Three verbs belonging to this group were analyzed: preocupar, irritar and incomodar. This work explores several factors which have been used to account for psychological verbs (transitivity, thematic roles, animacy and alignment) and the causes and meanings that have been identified as responsible for the selection of a dative pronoun versus an accusative pronoun. Seventy-eight letters to the editor in the newspapers of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay) were analyzed. Instances of these verbs with dative, accusative or null pronouns were identified and analyzed in light of various theories proposed to account for these structures in order to seek empirical data to either support or refute them.
