It is the purpose of this thesis to show that Laços de família (Family Ties,) A hora da estrela (The Hour of the Star) and Um sopro de vida: Pulsações (A Breath of Life: Pulsations,) all written by the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, have important characteristics in common with what we refer to as family relationships and attempts to build such relationships with people who are removed from conventional family ties. This work will analyze these three works and pay particular attention to the concerns that arise within a family/friend environment that leads to multiple individual experiences. Also, two chapters focus on the creation of characters and narrators by Lispector who function as a narrator/character to tell the stories. These narrators sometimes see themselves creating characters in order to try to establish a family environment among themselves.
