The ‘’crônica,’’ a literary genre that derivates from journalism, is a hybrid of news and literature that was developed intensively in Brazil in the XIX century. This literary genre provides a rich resource for the study of habits and philosophy of past times. Machado de Assis and João do Rio are prominent examples of chroniclers from their respective times, revealing many aspects of the city of Rio de Janeiro from the late XIX century and early XX century, that include discussions of religion and landscapes. Though they belong to distinct periods, Machado de Assis pertaining to an earlier one, the Brazilian Realist period and João do Rio a later Pre-modernist period, their works ultimately complement each other and form a high degree of continuity.
