dc.description.abstractThe development of geographic information system (GIS) is accomplished by increasing popularity of Internet GIS. However, currently most commercial Web GIS applications use proprietary data sets and employ raster images to disseminate maps. The traditional method of Web GIS lacks interoperability, efficiency and quality. To overcome these problems, a conceptual framework is proposed to achieve data interoperability and efficient dissemination of high quality maps by using eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The framework uses the Web Feature Service (WFS) to provide feature level Geography Markup Language (GML) data, which are used to store and exchange geographical information. The Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) standard is used to visualize GML data in web browsers. The Web Map Service (WMS) is used to provide remotely sensed images. Two prototypes are developed to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the framework. It is concluded that advanced Web-based GIS applications can be implemented by applying GML, SVG, WFS and WMS techniques.
