The understanding of citta, the dynamic process of mind, is vital to the understanding of Early Buddhism’s process of liberation. The teachings of the Theravadin school describe a gradual path to awakening. Individuals are invited to understand their own citta, as it is, without judgment. Once one understands the nature of one’s citta, one must develop it skillfully for the purpose of awakening. This thesis explores the Theravadin understanding of citta and its place on the path to awakening (nibbana). Index words: Citta, Satipa..hana, Cittabhavana (Cultivation of mind), Theravada, Abhidhamma.
