This paper uses the theories of Carl Jung to analyze Mientras vivimos by Maruja Torres. The Jungian concepts of the stages of life and the persona explain the psychic and emotional state of Regina at the beginning of the novel. Through Regina’s interaction with Judit, her psyche activates the archetype of the child, which allows her to return to the period of her early twenties. Moreover, the archetype of the animus is manifested by Regina’s psyche by means of her contact with Alex as well as through letters that her father wrote to Teresa, thereby providing her a way to reconcile with her mentor and the archetype of the Great Mother. The Jungian perspective is an essential tool for the analysis of Mientras vivimos in that it reveals the process of individuation through which Regina comes to establish her authentic self.
