This dissertation is an innovative and complex study of Cuban intellectual history from 1986 to 1995. The focus is on the analysis of the self representation of the Cuban intellectual in several cultural records of the period which range from the filmic to the literary genres. The role of the intellectual, its relations with power, and its (de)mystification as an agent of change are analysed in order to understand the dynamics established between the field of cultural production and the field of power. Issues raised from the study of discourses that either narrate or “erase” the nation, from the confrontation between postmodernity and revolutionary paradigms, and from the analysis of cultural practices of different sorts allow for a thorough analysis of the period, which I consider to be an inflection point in the history of the Cuban revolution.
