These five chapters of a novel in progress explore love as it translates across age and culture, love as it eclipses logic. Charlotte Ludlow, the central character, finds and loses it unexpectedly, and is lost and found in the same way. The aim of the unnamed narrator in this love story is not to simply tell it straight, but to probe inside the secret life of woman—what she seeks and finds in her relationships and in her solitude. In this manner she is a mediator, reconciling Charlotte’s tale with a more universal one.
