Preservation and re-creation
Abstract
Ruins by their very nature are an incomplete record to the past. Their primary expression of decay presents the historic preservation community with an opportunity to explore the different ways the narratives of ruins can be depicted. Preservation and restoration applications used by the National Park Service, and the methods employed by Disneyland and Hollywood are the means by which the author explores the multi-layered narratives found on the ruined historic landscape of Dungeness, Cumberland Island, Georgia. This thesis examines possible interpretations of this National Historic Landscape in an effort to broaden the public interest and interaction.
