    Abstract
Despite the increase in its total global production, since the 1970s peanuts' share in the total production of vegetable oil and meal has decreased following the emergence of soybeans. In addition, an increasing share of the total production of peanuts has been devoted to food purposes. World-harvested area has changed very little since the 1970s; however, there have been regional and sub-regional shifts.
